Box Score LOUDONVILLE, NY – Senior
Keenan Cook made the most of his senior day at Hickey Field on Saturday afternoon, needing four points coming into the men's lacrosse battle with NJIT to top the 100 point mark for his career. Cook did just that and more, and the Saints rolled to a 20-18 victory over the Highlanders.
With the win, the Saints (6-5) matched the most goals in a game since 2012, when they scored 22 in a win over Hartford and scored 20 in a win over Marist earlier that season. Siena set new single-game records with 65 shots and 59 ground balls, while Cook led the individual accolades, setting a new career-high in single-game points with eight. He became the 29
th overall member into Siena's 100 point club, and the second this season when classmate
Mike Reilly topped the mark as well.
Cook scored four times and added four assists, while Reilly ended up with a four-point day with a goal and three assists. Junior
Brendan Johnson also had a career day, scoring three times with two assists for a five-point showing. Sophomore
Jason Zou also showed out in the faceoff circle, winning 20 times to set the most faceoff wins in five years since Casey Dowd won 22 in a single game. Siena had 12 different goal scorers on the game, with senior
Eric Munn also putting up a three point day with two goals and an assist.
NJIT (2-11) got a six-point day from Collin Fogerty, as he scored once and dished five assists. Aaron Forster would score a team-high four times and add an assist, while Ryan Darrow scored three times and added an assist.
The Highlanders struck first in the opening 66 seconds, as Darrow got NJIT on the board for a 1-0 lead. That would be the only one they would get, as Siena turned up a 5-0 run capped by a
Jack Kiernan tally with 3:50 left to play in the first quarter. Both sides would score another to get to a 6-2 Siena lead after one quarter. Cook's 100 point clincher would come on his goal with 1:01 to play in the first after he dished three assists to begin the game.
The Green and Gold scored thanks to a Munn goal to open the second quarter to go up 7-2, before NJIT opened a 4-0 run to pull back within one at 7-6 with 5:31 to play in the second. However,
George Rusnak scored to give Siena an 8-6 lead just 31 seconds later. Siena would score twice more, and the Highlanders once more before the half to go into halftime at 10-7 in favor of the Saints.
Siena began to pull away in the third quarter, outscoring NJIT 6-4 in the third frame to hold a 16-11 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Back charged the Highlanders in the fourth, as a 3-0 run from the 5:34 mark and 4:12 mark in the fourth brought them back within striking distance at 19-16.
Nick Casner would help the cause, scoring his second goal of the day for the 20
th Siena tally with 3:14 to play. The Highlanders didn't go away, scoring twice more with 1:28 to play, and with three seconds to play to make it 20-18. But the final few goals from Siena proved big, as they held on for the win.
Siena also went 3-for-3 on extra man opportunities in the game, as well as forced 18 turnovers. In total, Siena went 24-for-41 in the faceoff circle, and only served one penalty after three faceoff violations in the second half.
The Saints will return to action next Saturday, April 20 when they play host to Detroit Mercy in their home finale of the season. The opening faceoff for the duel will start things up at 1 p.m.
