Siena Water Polo came very close once again to earning its first conference win of the 2019 season, but could not fend of rivals to begin the third MAAC weekend of the year. Taking the pool in Brooklyn, NY on the campus of Saint Francis College (NY), the Saints fell to Iona, 14-13, before dropping a 7-6 decision to Virginia Military Institute later in the evening.
Looking to avenge losses to both teams that came in Lexington, VA March 9-10, the Saints jetted out to a 4-1 lead over the Gaels after a period of play, and held a 6-5 advantage at the half. With five different goal scorers in the first half, it was junior Diana Fernandez who game the Saints the lead heading into the intermission, netting the go-ahead goal with five seconds remaining after the Gaels had netted the game's previous four points.
Iona would go on to pull ahead with six goals in the third quarter, and although the Saints would stay within three and as close as down one throughout the second half, the Gaels scored with 22 seconds remaining to take a two-goal lead. Siena could not manage any more after Fernandez cemented a five-goal performance with just 10 seconds remaining. Sophomore Kristen Burger also contributed a hat trick, while reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Week Kennedy Joseph notched a season-best 12 saves in-goal.
Re-taking the pool for an evening affair, sophomore Sophia Torres scored to give Siena a 1-0 lead after a period of play against VMI. The Keydets would outscore the Saints 4-1 in the second frame, however, with the Green and Gold having to come from behind thereafter. After putting a pair of goals on the board in the third period, Fernandez scored twice in the final quarter and helped Siena's defense hold VMI off the board, but it was too little too late, as the Saints dropped their 12 contest in a row. Despite the loss, Joseph remained active in-between-the-pipes Siena, making 12 more saves on the match.
Following the doubleheader, Siena will conclude weekend conference action against Villanova Sunday afternoon at 1:30 PM. Â
