POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Siena Water Polo (5-5) saw it's four-match winning streak come to a close Saturday afternoon at the Courtney Fisher Invite in Poughkeepsie, NY. The Saints battled by fell in a pair of 9-8 losses to MAAC rivals LIU and Saint Francis Brooklyn at the McCann Natatorium on the Campus of Marist College.
Siena began it's inaugural meeting against the first-year Sharks by working to overcome a 4-2 deficit after one quarter and a 7-4 hole at the half. The Saints outscored LIU, 4-2, in the third period to knot the match at seven apiece, with sophomore Bianca Prinsloo, juniors Anna Borton and Kristen Burger and freshman Grace Boeve each finishing the back of the net during that time.
The Sharks would battle back to score three of the final four goals of the game, including the match-winner with just over two minutes remaining from freshman Kate Hinrichs. Sophomore Georgia Vargas concluded the match with a hat trick, while senior Diana Fernandez and junior Sophia Torres also contributed a goal.
The Saints then took the pool later in the evening to try and rebound against the Terriers, with action tied up at two after one period and Saint Francis holding a 4-3 lead at the half. Siena briefly held a 6-5 advantage off a third quarter goal from Vargas but conceded three straight goals and could not make up the difference, despite Borton making it a one-goal game with just over a minute left. Vargas netted five of the team's eight goals in the night cap, while Prinsloo added a pair.
Following three of the last four weekends filled with tournament competition, Siena will take a two-week hiatus before heading to the Harvard Invite for three more non-conference matches March 7-8.
