EDISON, NJ – In celebration of its Ruby Anniversary throughout the 2020-21 academic year, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference will be unveiling its 40th Anniversary Teams this summer to highlight some of the league's all-time great student athletes and coaches from the 24 sports in which the league crowns champions. The MAAC 40th Anniversary Men's and Women's Tennis Teams features five Siena legends each in Mitsuki Fukamachi, Ali Garrity, Denisa Hluchova, Nicole Mayer, and Sarah Mayer for the women, and Michael Amico,
Sagar Bains,
Tomas del Olmo, Jeremy Deuel,
Guillermo Lopez Torres for the men.
"We are proud at the MAAC to be celebrating excellence both on and off the field for 40 years," said MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. "It's a true testament to all of the coaches, administrators, and student-athletes who have made this possible over the last four decades. Their hard work and dedication has made the MAAC what it is today; a conference that celebrates their outstanding efforts in 24 unique championships every year. Despite the challenges presented in the current climate with the COVID-19 pandemic, the future of the MAAC is strongly cemented in the commonality of our member institutions and commitment to the mission of the conference."
Mitsuki Fukamachi (2013-17)
Scoring a First Team All-MAAC (No. 1 doubles) selection in 2016-17, she is also a three-time Second Team All-MAAC. Fukamachi ranks second all-time in singles wins (53), and ranks second all-time in doubles victories (51). She also ranks tops all-time with Ali Garrity as the winningest duo in program history in doubles (46), including a single-season program record 20 wins in 2016-17. She tops the career wins list at No. 3 singles (34), and her 20 doubles wins in 2016-17 ranks second all-time for a single-season. Fukamachi is also tied for tenth all-time at No. 2 singles wins (11), and tied for the seventh-highest single-season singles wins mark in 2013-14 (15). She owns the top two single-season wins marks at the No. 3 lineup spot (14 & 11), and is a three-time MAAC Player of the Week.
Ali Garrity (2013-17)
A former First Team All-MAAC (No. 1 doubles) in 2016-17, Garrity is also a three-time Second Team All-MAAC selection. She is the program's all-time leader in doubles victories (53), and is top all-time with Mitsuki Fukamachi in team doubles wins (46), including a single-season program record 20 wins in 2016-17. She ranks eighth all-time in singles wins (43), and ranks third all-time in No. 1 singles wins (33). Her 21 doubles wins in 2016-17 ranks tops all-time in a single-season, and she scored 13 No. 1 singles wins in 2016-17, which ranks fifth among single-season marks all-time. In addition, she is a five-time MAAC Player of the Week.
Denisa Hluchova (2002-06)
Tied for fourth all-time in singles wins (46), Hluchova also ranks fifth all-time in #1 singles wins (14) and second in #3 singles wins (23). She helped the Saints reach the MAAC Tournament all four of her years on campus, including the only MAAC Championship in program history in 2006. She scored 17 singles victories her freshman year, which is in a tie for third all-time for a single season.
Nicole Mayer (2000-03)
A 2011 Siena Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, she is tied for sixth all-time in singles wins (45), and ranks second all-time with wins at #1 singles with those 45 victories. She scored 17 singles victories in 2002-03, which is tied for third all-time for a single season.
Sarah Mayer (2005-09)
A first ballot entry into the Siena Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014, Mayer is the program's all-time leader in singles wins (70) and single season singles wins (21), as well as singles wins from the no. 1 spot (59). A three-time MAAC Player of the Year (2006, 2008, 2009) she was also the MAAC Rookie of the Year and MAAC Tournament MVP in 2006, and led the Saints to their first and only MAAC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearances.
Michael Amico (2009-11)
Named 2010 MAAC Co-Rookie of the Year, Amico holds 29 career wins over two years in the Green and Gold. He collected 16 singles wins and 13 doubles wins, and was named to Siena's All-Decade team earlier this summer.
Sagar Bains (2017-Pres.)
Bains has 36 career wins through three seasons in the Green and Gold. He has 15 career singles wins and 21 doubles wins. Bains is currently tied for most doubles wins since 2010 with teammate
Guillermo Lopez Torres, and was named the Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month (Nov. 2019). In the classroom, he was named MAAC All-Academic and 2019 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar.
Tomas del Olmo (2018-Pres.)
The youngest representative of the group for the Green and Gold, del Olmo holds 28 career wins through only two seasons playing at the 1 and 2 singles spots. He has 14 total singles wins and 14 doubles wins, and was also named to the Saints All-Decade Team.
Jeremy Deuel (2005-09)
Deuel is the program's all-time singles wins leader with 32 victories to his name, most of which came from the team's top-2 singles spots. A one-time MAAC Player of the Week selection, he helped Siena earn trips to the MAAC Championship in 2008 and 2009 and their highest MAAC seed to-date as the number 4 team in 2008.
Guillermo Lopez Torres (2017-Pres.)
Named the first ever MAAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week (2/26/20) from Siena, Lopez Torres also gets it done in the classroom as a MAAC All-Academic selection. Also named a 2019 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar. He has 40 career wins through three seasons at Siena, and has 19 singles wins and 21 doubles victories.
The MAAC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.S. Military Academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College and Saint Peter's College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981, with the charter members competing in the sports of men's cross country and men's soccer. On January 2, 1982, Army traveled to Iona for the first MAAC men's basketball game and the MAAC story had begun. Siena College first joined the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in select sports beginning with the 1989-90 academic year, and currently sponsors 21 athletic programs which compete in the MAAC.
The MAAC is currently comprised of 11 full time member institutions and 17 associate members, crowning champions in 24 sports. Current members include Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, Manhattan College, Marist College, Monmouth University, Niagara University, Quinnipiac University, Rider University, Saint Peter's University, and Siena College.
