Niagara Sweeps Doubleheader, Takes Series From Saints

Baseball Suffers Pair of Narrow Defeats

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Niagara swept doubleheader action to take three of four in the series from Siena Baseball at Connors Park. The Purple Eagles won the opener 3-1 in seven innings, and captured the nightcap 10-9.

Game 1: Niagara 3, Siena 1 (7)
Niagara (4-4) scored twice in the first and added an insurance run in the sixth to win the opener. Ben Erwin and a pair of relievers combined to scatter seven hits for the Purple Eagles.

Niagara jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on an RBI double and a run-scoring single in the first. But freshman Connor Bovair settled in thereafter, striking out eight over 5.1 innings in a solid start.

Siena (3-5) got on the board in the third on an RBI single from freshman Kobe Stenson to drive in classmate Donovan Montgomery. Montgomery, Pat O'Hare, and Evan St. Claire led the way offensively with two hits apiece for the Saints.

Game 2: Niagara 10, Siena 9
Niagara scored five runs in the first and reclaimed the lead for good with a four-run seventh to complete the doubleheader sweep and secure the series victory. Siena lost despite pounding out 16 hits, as the Saints stranded 14 runners on base.

Dawson Bailey capped a five-run second inning with a three-run homer to stake Niagara to a quick 5-0 lead. But Siena chipped away, eventually scoring seven unanswered runs to go in front.

After getting a run back in the second, the Saints added three in the third on home runs from Jake Hall and Montgomery. Siena tacked on three more in the sixth capped by a two-run double from freshman Bryce Porter to take a 7-5 advantage.

But the lead was short lived as five straight Purple Eagles reached base in the seventh. Cole Tucker tied the game with a two-run homer, while pinch-hitter Joe Tevlin put Niagara back on top with an RBI double.

Porter paced the offensive with four hits, while Hall added three as all nine starters for the Saints had at least one hit apiece.

Siena will look to bounce back next weekend when it hits the road for the first time this spring. The Saints are set to travel to Monmouth for doubleheader action Friday and Saturday starting at noon both days.
