LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Men's Soccer (3-3-1) is set to conclude what has been an encouraging non-conference campaign during the Fall 2021 season. The Saints will face off against Ivy League opponent Brown (2-4-0) for just the second time ever on Saturday, September 25 at 3:30 PM at Hickey Field, with action broadcast live on ESPN+.
Following a 2-1 non-league win over first-time foe Merrimack at home last Saturday, the Saints played regionally-ranked Vermont to a 2-2 draw on Tuesday in Burlington, with a last-second equalizer coming into play for the visitors. Reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week
Zach Gardner scored in the 16
th minute for his second straight match with a goal before the Catamounts netted a pair of scores off set pieces in the first half. Following a red card that put them a man down with just 25 seconds remaining, the Saints drew a free kick opportunity with just five seconds left that freshman
Jacob Arachchige-Jensen converted from 25 yards out for his first collegiate goal. The result went down as the team's first draw in non-conference play since September 8, 2018.
Heading into their fourth home match of the season with a 2-1 mark in Loudonville thus far, the Saints will look to continue sustainability on their home turf, with the team holding a 6-5-1 home record since the start of the 2019 season. Nine of the team's last ten home matches have been decided by one goal or less, with the Saints holding a 5-3-2 mark during that time. At 3-3-1, Siena is off to its best start through seven matches since 2014 (5-2).
The Green and Gold boast eight different point scorers through seven non-conference matches on the season, with Arachchige-Jensen ranking fourth in the nation with five assists to lead the team with seven total points. Gardner and fifth-year defender
Jacob Pacheco have each netted a pair of goals on the season, while sophomore
Bilal Hersi and freshmen
Frederic Storodegard and
Thomas Storodegard have also scored this year. Senior goalkeeper
Greg Monroe ranks fifth in the nation with 39 saves, as well as 11
th individually with 5.57 saves per-game.
Siena and Brown will face off for just the second time ever, with the Green and Gold taking a 2-1 win on September 14, 2014 in Providence, Rhode Island. Having also faced Cornell and Dartmouth in their history, the Saints are 1-3 all-time against Ivy League opponents, with the Bears giving them their only victory thus far. The teams share a pair of common opponents on the year, with Brown taking a 5-1 win over MAAC foe Niagara and dropping a 4-2 decision to Bryant earlier this season.
Led by 12
th year head coach Patrick Laughlin, Brown enters the weekend on a three-match losing skid, falling most recently in a 3-0 shutout to #24 Providence last Wednesday. The Bears boast 11 different point scorers and nine different players who have scored a goal this season, with senior Derek Waleffe leading the team with seven points as the only player with multiple goals on the season (three). The Bears have 18 underclassmen on their roster, and are taking the field during the Fall 2021 season after not playing at all during the 2020-21 year in keeping with the Ivy League's decision to cancel athletic competition last year.
