STATEN ISLAND, NY – Siena Women's Indoor Track freshman Claire Gardner became the latest Saint to set a school record this season, doing so as the team kicked off a busy weekend of competition. Siena sent runners to both the Great Dane Classic at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, New York and the first day of the John Thomas Terrier Classic at the BU Track and Tennis Center in Boston, Massachusetts.
Gardner highlighted a jam-packed day of competition with a new school record mark of 3:02.04 in the 1000 meter race at the Great Dane Classic, surpassing the old mark of 3:02.10 set by program great Sarah Forman back in 2019. This marks the third school record set during the 2021-22 indoor track season and the first by a member of the women's squad.
Over to the east in Beantown, the women's team continued a solid day of action with near-top times in the first day of action at the Terrier Classic. Junior Elaine Atanasova logged the second-fastest time in program history in the 3000 (9:51.39), while classmate Delia McDade Clay (10:07.37) and freshman Kayla Schmidt (10:08.70) went for the seventh and eighth-best Siena times, respectively. Graduate student Regina Rosati ran the third-fastest program time in the 5000 at 17:05.53, while junior Keira Cohen logged a mark of 18:04.83. Freshman Keira Flaherty's time of 5:12.88 in the mile was good for the ninth-fastest in program history.
Siena sent the majority of its roster to compete on Staten Island for the second consecutive weekend. Gardner placed 11th overall in the 1000, while sophomore Jennifer McClintock took 18th with a time of 3:11.79. Senior Shannon Bergin (5:49.18) and sophomore Isabella Painter (5:52.97) ran in the mile, while freshman Julia Caputo (10:43.27, 14th) and sophomore Katharine Hesler (10:51.92, 15th) participated in the 3000 meter race. Seniors Holly Bednarek (2:27.94) and Olivia Durant (2:32.85) placed 22nd and 29th, respectively, in the 800 meter event.
Results on the men's side at the Great Dane Classic were highlighted by freshman Nik Springer and Sophomore Griffin Cooke, who ran times of 2:36.65 and 2:36.83, respectively, in the 1000 to log the program's 12th and 13th top times in the event.
