MONTGOMERY, NY – Carry on my Cayward son, there'll be peace when you are done.
Despite losing top finishers and its head coach from last season, Siena Cross Country proved that it is still contending as a perennial MAAC power.
Led by an unprecedented performance from junior
Jackson Cayward, the Siena men took second at the 2023 MAAC Cross Country Championships, while the women placed third as a team at Twin Ponds at the Farm in Montgomery, New York on Saturday.
The performances solidified three straight years of top-three team finishes for both programs, as well as back-to-back second place finishes on the men's side for the second time in six years, and the sixth consecutive top-3 finish for the women.
Coming off a MAAC All-Rookie Team finish last season, Cayward became the first Siena male runner to finish second at the event with a time of 24:33.4, marking the second straight year that the Saints have boasted a top-two individual finish in either race. The Tolland, Connecticut native also boasted the distinction of being the first non-Iona men's runner to cross the finish line, something Siena has now done in four straight MAAC Championship races.
Cayward was joined in receiving All-MAAC honors by way of a top-15 individual finish on the men's side by sophomore
Tyler Greene, who finished 13
th with a time of 25:16.1 after also earning All-Rookie Team honors last season. Rounding out the men's top-five finishers were senior
Chris DeForest (26:06.8), fifth year
Tommy Anderson (26:14.4), and junior
Nathaniel Sletten (26:22.2) in 21
st, 25
th, and 29
th, respectively.
The women's race featured the first career All-MAAC finishes for junior
Julia Caputo (21:53.8) and graduate student
Madeleine Hesler (21:55.9), who placed 13
th and 14
th, respectively. Freshman
Kyra Pellegrino placed 18
th (22:19.1) and received MAAC All-Rookie Team honors as the third runner with freshman eligibility to cross the finish line. The women's top five was rounded out by senior
Katharine Hesler (22:22.2) and sophomore
Stephanie Queiroz (22:32.6), who took 19
th and 23
rd, respectively.
Siena will look to roll momentum from the strong finishes into the 2023 NCAA Northeast Region Cross Country Championships on Friday, November 11 at Van Cortlandt Park in The Bronx, NY.
