Siena Water Polo Begins 2023 Season at Bruno Classic

Saints Set to Take Pool for 22nd Campaign

PROVIDENCE, RI – Under the direction of fourth year head coach Alex Williams, Siena Water Polo will commence the 2023 season this weekend at the Bruno Classic in Providence, Rhode Island.

The Saints will face Gannon and #25 Brown on Friday, February 3 at 4 PM and 6:50 PM, respectively, and will take on Pomona-Pitzer and Santa Clara on Saturday, February 4 at 11:20 AM and 4 PM, respectively. All matches will take place inside Brown's Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

Selected to finish ninth in the 2023 MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll, the Green and Gold will look to improve upon a 4-25 overall mark from last season, which included a 1-15 mark in MAAC play. The 2023 slate includes three home matches at the Siena Swim Center as part of the MAAC's return to round-robin conference weekends. Additionally, the league announced an expanded postseason field of six teams beginning this season at the start of the 2022-23 academic year. Siena will aim to clinch a postseason berth for the first time since 2010.

The team's opening weekend will pit them against one ranked opponent in the host Bears, which will be a precursor for challenging upcoming competition. Siena is currently in line to play a total of 13 matches this season against opponents who are either ranked or receiving votes in the CWPA Top-25 Poll, with five of those matches against conference opponents.

The Saints are set to return eight letterwinners from last season while adding eight newcomers, with 2022 CWPA All-America Honorable Mention selection Bianca Prinsloo returning for a fifth season with the program. The Johanesburg, South Africa native and 2021 Second Team All-MAAC selection enters her fifth season in Green and Gold ranked tenth all-time in points, ninth in goals, tenth in assists, and ninth in shots attempted.

Both of the team's goalkeepers from the 2022 season – senior Anna Mossakowski and junior Caroline Behr – will also suit up for the team this year, with Mossakowski earning Second Team All-MAAC honors during the 2022 season. Mossakowski made 107 saves in 24 appearances last season, while Behr tallied 82 saves in 19 outings.

Siena's non-conference includes stops at the Princeton Invitational (Feb. 25-26), the Harvard Invitational (March 4-5), and the Aztec Invitational (March 10-11) prior to beginning MAAC action on March 19. The team will take the pool at the Siena Swim Center for home league action on Saturday, March 25 against St. Francis Brooklyn at Noon and Marist at 4 PM, as well as against Mount St. Mary's for Senior Day on Sunday, March 26 at 1 PM.
