LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL – Following a full season of competitive action and encouraging spring campaigns for both teams, Siena Men's & Women's Golf will head to Florida this weekend with hopes of returning to the top of the conference. Both teams will compete at the 2023 MAAC Men's & Women's Golf Championships, held this season at Disney's Palm Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, Florida from Friday, April 21 – Sunday, April 23.
The 41st MAAC Golf Championship will begin on Friday, April 21 at 7:30 AM, with round two taking place on Saturday, April 22. The 54-hole Palm Golf Course is serving as the host of the MAAC Championships for the first time since 2014 and the third time overall. The 2023 MAAC Men's and Women's Golf Champions will receive the MAAC's automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament.
Siena Men's Golf will head to Florida in search of its fifth MAAC title and first since 2016, while Women's Golf will aim to return to the mountaintop for the first time since 2014, in what would be their league-leading 14th championship. Siena has featured fifth McLeod Trophy (MAAC Individual Champion) winners on the men's end, while the women have boasted an individual medalist 11 times.
Combining to capture 17 conference titles, Siena is collectively the most decorated school in MAAC history, dating back to the league's first championship competitions held for the men in 1982 and the women in 1998. The women captured a league-record 13 titles, all of which came during a 14-season span from 2001-14. The men will take part in the MAAC Championship for the 32nd time, while the women will attend their 23rd postseason event.
Heading into this year's competition, the Siena Men hold the second-highest GolfStat team ranking of any squad in the MAAC at 239, while the women's team ranking of 249 is good for the seventh-highest among MAAC teams.
The Siena men matched their best finish at the MAAC Championships since the 2016 title run with a second-place finish last season, trailing 2022 MAAC Champion Rider by six strokes, while the women finished eighth. Men's senior
Matthew Ferrari finished in a four-way tie for seventh to take home All-MAAC honors last season, while graduate student
Brody Yates was an All-MAAC finisher in 2021. Overall, the men have boasted an All-MAAC finisher in each of the last eight seasons.
The men enter the postseason having concluded regular season action on an encouraging note, with each of the last eight team rounds going under 300. The Saints tied for the top spot at the Shark Invitational earlier this week, with a 54-hole score of 852 good for the lowest 54-hole output in program history. Siena claimed the team title at the Dartmouth Invitational back in September, and also defeated sister school St. Bonaventure in October to claim The Murray Cup. Their round two 18-hole score of -10, 274 at the Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate in September set program records for low round and low round vs. par.
Five of Siena's men boast average scores of under 75 for the season, with the team combining for 15 individual rounds in the 60's and 34 rounds of par or better. Ferrari leads the squad with a 73.38 average score, four rounds in the 60's, and nine rounds of par or better. Senior
Nolan Crowley (73.92) is also under 74 on the season, has recorded three rounds under 70, and seven of per or better, while freshman
Austin Giroux etched his name in the Siena record books earlier this week by shooting a 65 during the opening round of the Shark Invitational, good for the second-lowest individual 18-hole score in program history and the lowest in 18 years.
The Siena women carded a season-low team round of 312 during the second round of the Hartford Hawks Invitational on October 4, and have seen three individual top-ten finishes in tournament play this season. Two have come from sophomore
Manoela Barcellos, who leads the team with an average score of 81.06, and took seventh at the Siena Invitational in September while tying for ninth at the Intercollegiate at Prospect Bay earlier this month. Classmate
Jillian Barend carded a round of 75 to open the Hartford Hawks Invitational, marking the lowest individual round shot by a Saint this season.
Both programs have combined for three MAAC weekly awards this season, with Barcellos earning Women's Golfer of the Week on April 5, Yates taking home Men's Golfer of the Week honors on March 15, and Ferrari winning the award on March 1. Additionally, Siena placed ten student-athletes on the MAAC All-Academic team on Thursday for the most ever combined between the two squads, with the men boasting five or more honorees for the second straight year and the women setting a program record with five.
