LOUDONVILLE, NY – Walking off into the sunset on top into a welcoming retirement has been the storybook cliché that so many coaches aspire to, but don't usually reach.
For the Siena Women's Tennis program's all-time winningest coach
Jeff Osborn, that reality was realized when he completed his goal of balancing out his championship hardware by earning a MAAC Men's Tennis Championship ring last month to complement his other hand that already flashed MAAC championship gold for winning the Women's Tennis title two years prior.
It's a satisfying final chapter for Osborn, who officially announced his retirement on top as he sets off to retire in sunny Florida.
"Coach Osborn was a catalyst for moving the Siena tennis programs forward. He recruited outstanding tennis players, who were excellent students and good citizens," said Siena Vice President/Director of Athletics John D'Argenio. "I want to wish him the very best in his retirement and thank him for his tireless efforts in preparing our student-athletes for success both on-and-off the courts."
In his eight seasons at the helm, Osborn leaves behind an indelible mark in the history of Siena athletics. He reached the pinnacle this season by guiding the men's tennis team to its' first MAAC Championship with a 4-0 win against #1 Fairfield while simultaneously clinching the team's first NCAA Tournament berth with a trip to nationally-ranked #11 Harvard.
In the MAAC Semifinals, the Saints rallied from an 0-3 deficit to defeat #2 Quinnipiac. The run demonstrated the resiliency in Osborn's team as both opponents had defeated Siena earlier in the season.
In that respect, the comeback served as a form of symbolism in how Osborn was an integral part of the Saints' turnaround for the men's program, humbly beginning his first season with a winless 2015-16 campaign before the program eventually rose to become a perennial contender in the conference with a program-best 14-9 record and MAAC Semifinal finish in the 2021-2022 season.
The ninth head coach in the program's history would finish out his tenure on a high note with back-to-back winning seasons (13-11 in 2022-2023) and double-digit victory seasons with an overall record of 27-20 and 8-4 in the MAAC over the course of his last two seasons with the men's team.
In leading the women's program, Osborn guided the Saints to more sustained success from the onset with six double-digit victory seasons. In the other two seasons, it was cut short due to the pandemic, but those teams already finished above. 500 with records of 8-3 and 7-4, respectively.
His women's team reached the apex during the 2020-2021 season when it claimed its' second MAAC Women's Tennis Championship in the program's history with a 4-1 triumph over top seeded Quinnipiac. The run would extend to the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament where the Saints would face nationally-ranked #11 Florida.
Osborn's reach went beyond just affirming the Siena tennis program on a bigger stage, but also on the Siena athletics' program as a whole.
The 2016-2017 campaign was historical in that it remains as the best single-season start (15-0) to any Siena program and still ranks as the season with the best winning percentage (.900) at 18-2 of any Green and Gold tennis team. The mark surpassed the 1949-1950 Men's Basketball team's 14-0 start for most wins to begin a season without a defeat.
Osborn finishes with an overall record of 86-62 with the women's program including 32-13 in the MAAC.
"It has been an amazing run these past eight years and so happy I was able to meet so many great young men and women that did great on the tennis court, but also in the classroom," Osborn said.
"Both programs have made great strides and are considered one of the top teams in the MAAC now and I am happy to have been able to work with such hard-working kids. I will truly miss coaching at Siena, but will always follow and be rooting for all of the Siena sports teams. Thanks for the memories and Go Saints!"
