LOUDONVILLE, NY – It is with profound sadness that the Siena Athletics Family shares the news of the passing of men's lacrosse great Colin Clive '14. The 2011 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Player and a two-time MAAC Tournament Champion (2011, 2014), Clive passed away on Monday, July 3 at the age of just 31 following a courageous five-year battle with brain cancer.
A native of Massapequa, New York who starred on attack for the Saints from 2011-14, Clive currently ranks tied for fifth all-time in program history in career goals scored (115) and 13
th in career points (143). A key contributor for a Siena Lacrosse program which advanced to the MAAC Championship Game in all four of his seasons, he bookended his collegiate career with MAAC Tournament Championships (2011, 2014) while also helping guide the Saints to three MAAC Regular Season Championships (2011, 2012, 2014).
Clive began his decorated collegiate career by earning MAAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors after leading Siena to the program's second MAAC Tournament Championship as a freshman in 2011. A two-time MAAC Rookie of the Week that spring, he helped guide the Green & Gold to the program's first-ever national ranking of No. 20 in both the final 2011 USILA Coaches' and Media Polls.
Clive capped his stellar run at Siena with MAAC All-Tournament Team honors after helping lead the program to its third and most recent MAAC Tournament Championship during his senior season in 2014. That spring, he earned Second Team All-MAAC acclaim after tying for the conference lead with three game-winning goals, and was also named one of just 20 Division I men's lacrosse candidates nationally for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award. Clive was named a First Team All-MAAC selection after scoring a career-high 46 points during his junior season in 2013.
In addition to his time at Siena, Clive also starred on the world stage, where he represented his father's native England at both the 2012 European Lacrosse Championships and the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse World Championships. He scored 17 goals – including a hat trick in the Championship Game – while leading England to a perfect 8-0 record and the 2012 European Lacrosse Championship in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Clive scored 14 points while helping guide England to a fifth-place finish in the 38-nation International Lacrosse World Championships held in Commerce, Colorado in 2014.
Following graduation, Clive had settled into a business career in Manhattan before being diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of just 26 in 2018. He endured multiple surgeries and experimental treatment while courageously battling cancer for five years.
Just four months after his diagnosis, Clive played an active role in the Cycle for Survival where he was one of the leading fundraisers for the national movement which raised $42 million that year.
Clive was honored in 2021 at the American Cancer Society of the Capital Region Coaches vs. Cancer Basket "Ball" where he was awarded the Mary Ann Raymond Donnelly Fighting Spirit Award.
An only child, Clive was predeceased by his parents David and Barbara,
who tragically passed away just five days apart in January 2021. The Siena Lacrosse Family, who had already rallied around Colin following his cancer diagnosis three years earlier, came even closer during his greatest time of need by creating a GoFundMe to help ease the burden for his long-term care and medical expenses.
Nearly $850,000 was raised in support of Colin by over 12,000 donors.
Services for Colin Clive begin Friday, July 7 with visitation from 4-8 p.m. at the Massapequa Funeral Home, South Chapel, located at 4980 Merrick Road in Massapequa, New York. In the month just prior to his passing, Siena College established The Clive Family Scholarship in honor of Colin and his parents in recognition of his courage, stoicism, and drive during his heroic health battle. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a Siena Men's Lacrosse student athlete who demonstrates financial need and the qualities of a Siena Saint.
