LOUDONVILLE, NY – Make it a trifecta for the Siena Men's Golf team as the Saints captured the Murray Cup for a third consecutive year against sister school Saint Bonaventure on Tuesday at Schuyler Meadows Club.
Senior
Nick Lyons fired a team-best 2-under-par 70, benefiting from a strong front nine holes where he birdied on a par-5, 519-yard hole two, a par-5, 580-yard hole five and on a par-4, 408-yard hole seven to play even with Bonnies' top player Gabe Williams, who also shot -3 on the front nine.
While Williams closed with the best individual score of any with a 6-under-par 66 on the day, the Saints' collective consistency as a team prevailed as no player on Siena shot worse than 2-over-par among the top four players.
The result was a four-stroke win for Siena as the Saints shot even-par-280 for the single 18-hole round while the Bonnies shot 4-over-par 284. It evens the all-time series in the Murray Cup to 3-3 between the schools since it first began the event in 2017.
Siena men's head golf coach Steve Jensen said afterwards that this was the most talented team that he's had in his 10 years at the helm.
The Saints took a sizable lead early, leading by as many as eight strokes at the turn, before the Bonnies cut the lead down to just one stroke through 16-17.
Siena responded back with big shots down the stretch to put some distance between them and Saint Bonaventure as
Austin Giroux birdied the final three holes including one putt from about 20 to 25 feet away on 18.
Giroux and Mike McConie each shot 72 while
Michael Broeker and
Connor Kiel each shot 2-over-par 74.
Siena returns to competition for a fall finale at the Lehigh Invitational from Oct. 19-20.
