JERSEY CITY, NJ – Saint Peter's out-rebounded Siena Basketball 30-11 in the second half punctuated by 15 offensive rebounds in the stanza to defeat the Saints 75-53 at Run Baby Run Arena.
Corey Washington returned from a five-game injury absence to score 20 of his 29 points in the first half for Saint Peter's (12-11, 8-6) which snapped a four-game losing streak, albeit against the current top-four teams in the MAAC Standings. Reserve Michael Houge added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Peacocks which scored 27 of their points on second chance opportunities.
Michael Ojo scored 13 points on 5-6 shooting including 3-4 from three and added four steals for Siena (4-21, 3-11) which shot just 34%. Saint Peter's, which entered play ranked 20
th nationally in scoring defense (64.6), held the Saints top-two scorers
Sean Durugordon and
Michael Eley to just a combined 12 points on only 5-19 shooting, 23 points under their collective scoring average.
Siena opened the game on a 13-4 spurt over the first 5:10, but the Peacocks responded with an 11-2 answer to draw even. Saint Peter's led 36-30 at the half.
The Peacocks embarked upon a decisive 20-6 run spanning 5:50 early in the second half to pull free at 64-47 midway through the stanza. Saint Peter's grabbed six of their 22 total offensive rebounds during the stretch, leading to 11 second chance points.
The Saints, which started 7-10 from the field to open the second half, misfired on 16 of their final 17 attempts to fall for the 11
th time in their past 12 trips to Jersey City.
Siena returns to MVP Arena for the only time during a four-game span to host Canisius in their final February home game Sunday at 2 p.m. The Saints will welcome back and honor the members of the historic 1993-94 NIT team for a
30th Anniversary celebration at halftime, highlighted by the formal induction of Doremus Bennerman into the Siena Athletics Hall of Fame and the
retirement of his No. 23 jersey.
