Siena College will be represented this weekend (April 26-28) in both the Men's Premier division and the Women's Small College bracket at the National Sevens Collegiate Rugby Championship for the first time.
The men qualified for the Premier bracket through tournament point qualification. The Saints picked up points by attending several tournament this spring with their best performance coming in the Old Blue Rugby Tournament in New York, March 23. The Men go in to the National Finals with a 10-4 record.
The season has truly been a team effort with the squad suffering several injuries. Injuries to key players has given the opportunity to new comers such as
Holden Comley and Max Taylor who have really developed will this season and taken their opportunities with both hands.
The men will start their Championship campaign on Thursday, April 26 at 11am against University of Notre Dame.
The women qualified out right by winning the Tri-State Conference Championship on April 8 at Stony Brook Uni. The Saints saw off tough competition from Hofstra Uni to clinch their spot with a 19-15 win. This win completed the regular season finishing with a 10-1 record.
The Saints will move in to the finals full of confidence. The team has been lead by 7s Captain
Mykaela Reed (Freshman) showing the kind of leadership which helped her Captain Corning Rugby to a high school state championship last year. Mykaela is flanked by 15s Captain and top try scorer Bella Angelo. The team will also be bolstered by the return of injured Senior
Emma Walley.
The women will compete in the Small College Cup bracket with their first game on Friday, April 27 at 12pm against Ohio Wesleyan University.
