Men's Lacrosse

New chapter to be written in Siena-Marist rivalry on ESPNU

Saints and Red Foxes have split all-time series 21-21 dating back to 1977

LOUDONVILLE, NY – On Tuesday, Siena Men's Lacrosse head coach Liam Gleason discussed how he expected a game of runs for both Marist and his Saints in Wednesday's nationally-televised men's lacrosse rivalry on ESPNU at 8 p.m. under the lights of Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field in Poughkeepsie.

Fittingly, the all-time series that dates back to 1977 elicits that same vibe with each team demonstrating that it can capture momentum and ride it out over the years.

While Marist is currently riding an eight-game win streak versus the Saints in head-to-head match ups including last season's MAAC Championship 12-7, Siena has proven that it can also be the dominant team in the series.

From 2007-2014, Siena won 10 of 11 match ups with their I-87 rivals.

Despite Marist's recent advantage in the series, the games' tenor has been marked by white-knuckle intensity and gripping matches with five of the prior eight games decided by three goals or fewer.

While it was the Red Foxes who raised the MAAC Championship trophy last May at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY, coach Gleason said he doesn't take too much stock in what occurred.

"We're different and so are they," said Gleason said.

"The MAAC always has a lot of parity every year.  I think every year that it's up for grabs--top to bottom. In the preseason poll, it was us and Marist at one-two.  Now, look where we are at five and six and it just shows that every team can compete and there is not one dominant team."

Siena (5-6 overall, 3-3 MAAC) and Marist (5-6, 2-4 MAAC) will face off with major playoff implications on the line as only the top six teams in the conference will qualify for the MAAC Tournament.

Both teams have just two games remaining on their regular season schedule after Wednesday with Siena hosting Manhattan (5-6, 5-1 MAAC) this Saturday and then finishing out at Mount St. Mary's (1-11, 1-5 MAAC) on April 20.

Marist stays home on Saturday and squares off against LIU (8-2, 5-1 MAAC) and then finishes out the regular season at VMI (6-6, 2-4 MAAC) on April 20.

Wednesday night's game will be available to watch on ESPN+ with Jay Alter and Jules Heningburg on the call.

The Saints are coming off back-to-back wins including a complete team effort in defeating Quinnipiac 13-10 this past Saturday led by Pratt Reynolds' four goals and Caden Olmstead's three scores.

Reynolds now leads the conference in goals with 33 while Olmstead ranks tied for second in goals with 30.

Entering Wednesday's game, Reynolds now ranks 22nd all-time in program history in career points (113) and is 11th all-time in goals scored (101).

On the "X", graduate student Dylan Pape has skyrocketed up the leader board and now ranks second among regulars in conference-only face offs by winning .571 (84 wins) over six games.

Marist counters with another top face off specialist in junior Dylan Bedell, who has won .548 (85 wins in six conference games).

The Red Foxes are coming off an 11-10 victory at Mount St. Mary's, in which Deacy scored three goals and Noble Smith made 10 saves in net.

Marist's offense is led by senior Joshua Balcarcel (20 goals, 16 assists), who ranks tied for sixth in the conference in points per game (3.27).

Junior Jake Deacy (21 goals, four assists) and freshman Collin Patrick (14 goals, 11 assists) have each added 25 points apiece.

"Both fans are very passionate about their programs," said coach Gleason.

"Whether it's here or there, it's probably the loudest game of the game for us. The fact that it's going to be 8 p.m. on ESPNU and under the lights, it's certainly going to add more juice to it.  It should be a really exciting, fun one.  Our guys are going to get up no matter what.  It's a special rivalry-for sure."
