The lights and big stage of Boston University's John Thomas Terrier Classic was not going to deter senior
Keira Flaherty from grinding all the way through to the finish.
The Yorktown Heights, NY, native pushed herself into the Siena record books with the third fastest time recorded in the women's one-mile event (4:52) on Friday to place 56
th overall among some of the top runners in the country at the Track & Tennis Center in Boston, Ma. Her time finished ahead of some noteworthy competition like UConn's Calista Mayer, Fairfield's Hannah Snayd and BYU's Lexi Goff.
Flaherty's time came within about four seconds of surpassing program record holder Sarah Foreman (4:48.30) in 2019.
Junior
Mattingly O'Rourke put together a strong run, clocking in the same one-mile event in 5:05.58 for a personal best and a 96
th overall finish.
Fellow junior Katelyn DeForest also ran a personal best in the women's 5,000-meter race, crossing in 18:24.96 to place 68
th overall. Her previous best time was 18:53.
"This is one of the best meets of the season," said Siena head track and field coach
Elizabeth DeBole. "Olympians, U.S. Champions and NCAA Champions were there today."
In addition, senior Belle Painter (3:17 in the 1,000-meter) and sophomore
Katie Hayes (5:25.17 in the one-mile) each won their individual heats.
Siena will be back in competition at the Fastrack National Invite on Staten Island, NY next Friday, February 7 at 12 p.m. from the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex. The Siena Men will take part in the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m.
