Saints, Showtime Shoats Pummel Purple Eagles

Siena Routs Niagara 94-60 For Most Lopsided Victory in a Decade

ALBANY, NY – Siena Basketball dominated from start to finish to achieve its largest margin of victory in a decade in a 94-60 trouncing of Niagara at MVP Arena.  
 
The 34-point margin of victory was the largest for Siena (13-14, 8-8) since posting an 89-54 victory vs. Manhattan on Dec. 4, 2015. Moreover, the 94 points scored marked the Saints most in a regulation contest in six years, dating back to a season-opening 96-80 win over American on Nov. 5, 2019.
 
Justice Shoats led the way, matching his collegiate career-high for a third time while recording his second 31-point performance of the season to complement seven first half assists. He shot 10-14 from the field including a perfect 10-10 from the charity stripe for Siena which shot 25-27 from the free throw line. The Saints made 22 straight free throws to start, which would have been the most makes without a miss in a game in program history.  
 
Jhaylon Martinez scored 10 points to lead Niagara (10-16, 5-10) which entered play with three of their previous seven games decided by a point and a fourth in overtime.
 
Siena came out hot and never took their foot off the gas. The Saints connected on 12 of their first 15 shots to start, and scored 16 unanswered down the stretch to open as much as a 28-point first half lead. Siena led 53-28 at the break.
 
The Saints cruised in the second half – ultimately leading by as many as 40 – to prevail for the 17th time in the past 21 meetings between the programs in the Capital Region.
 
Freshman reserve Tajae Jones posted a season-high 16 points on 5-7 shooting and added seven rebounds for Siena which shot a season-high 56%. Classmate and reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week Gavin Doty added his fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Saints, which improved to 6-2 at home in MAAC action while averaging a whopping 83.8 points.
 
Brendan Coyle rounded out the double figure scorers with all 12 of his points in the first half on a perfect 3-3 from three for Siena, which held a commanding 29-2 advantage in points off turnovers.
 
The Saints close out their Western New York weekend homestand when they host Canisius in the annual Hall of Fame Game Sunday at 2 p.m. at MVP Arena. Amongst this year's six inductees who will be honored at halftime are Siena Basketball greats Michael Haddix '07 and Scott Knapp '01, as well as the 1949-50 squad which is set to be the first-ever team inducted into the Siena Athletics Hall of Fame.
