While Siena has started just 2-4 overall and 0-1 in MAAC play thus far in 2025, the Saints have played one of the more difficult schedules in the nation. Entering Friday, Siena's RPI stood at No. 22 as far as strength of opponents they played were concerned.
To date, it has dropped all four games by three goals or fewer with three of those games coming against teams that were ranked inside the top 25 of the USILA including games against Boston University, at Dartmouth and at last year's defending MAAC Champions Sacred Heart.
The Saints also have notched wins at Hofstra and at Binghamton.
For Iona and new head coach Chad Surman, its roster consists of all freshmen and redshirt freshmen. And, the Gaels have been competitive at LIU, at Stony Brook and versus Marist. Iona's first victory came at Hampton.
Siena is led by top facilitator
Ryan McCarthy (four goals, 16 assists),
Pratt Reynolds (18 goals, one assist) and
Conor Hufnagel (10 goals, eight assists).
In the face off "X", freshman
Logan Banek may provide the brightest area of them all as the New Hartford, NY native has rocketed up the nation's leader board in both face off win percentage (.648 with 92-of-142 won) and ground balls per game (9.50 per game). Banek ranks second in ground balls per game and is fifth in win percentage with those specialists that have taken at least 40 percent of his team's face offs.
Iona also received an encouraging start from one of its freshmen in Cullen Lawry, who leads the Gaels in goals with 16 and has the second most amount of ground balls with 20.
The young unit has also been backed from a trio of scorers with six goals apiece from Jake Riglietti, Jimmy Kennedy and Matthew Dyszkiewicz.
The goalkeepers match up features Saints graduate student
Andrew Arcuri (10.96 GAA, .551 save percentage and 81 saves) against the Gaels freshmen Denny Piekutowski (15.83 GAA, .460 save percentage and 81 saves).
