Siena (22-11) is just one step away from its first MAAC Tournament Championship in six years, and first earned on the court in 16 years. The Saints were awarded the 2020 MAAC Tournament Championship and NCAA Automatic Qualifier following their quarterfinal win over Manhattan as the highest remaining seed when COVID hit. Siena last won a MAAC Tournament Championship Game and played in an NCAA Tournament in 2010.
Â
The Saints are set to play in the program's 10
th MAAC Championship Game – tied for second-most in league history – and first in nine years. Tuesday will mark the sixth time in the 44-year history of the MAAC in which the title game will pit the No. 1 vs. the No. 3 seed, and first since third-seeded Manhattan defeated Iona back in 2015. The three-seed holds a 3-2 edge all-time in such matchups.
Â
MAAC Regular Season Champion Merrimack (23-10) fended off fifth-seeded Marist 58-57 Sunday night to advance to the program's third championship game in four seasons. The Warriors played in the 2024 Northeast Conference Championship Game and won the 2023 NEC Title, but did not go to the NCAA Tournament due to the program's transition period to the Division I level.
Â
Second-year MAAC foes Siena and Merrimack meet for the 16
th time overall in a series which the Warriors hold an 8-7 edge. Merrimack has won all three MAAC matchups, following a regular season series sweep this winter. The Warriors led by 19 before holding on late for a 63-59 win on Jan. 9 in Albany, and prevailed 79-72 in a nationally televised overtime thriller on Feb. 20 in North Andover. Â
