Men’s Lacrosse Bucks Trend; Dominates Canisius

Banek Wins 15 of 19 Face Offs; DeBellis solid in net in Saints’ 13-5 win

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. — The Siena Men's Lacrosse team bucked the trend of the road team winning in the series with Canisius as the Saints put together a dominant 13-5 victory over the Golden Griffins on Saturday at Hickey Field.

The road team had won nine of the previous 10 matchups between the teams.  The Saints took care of home turf on Saturday.

Siena (8-2, 4-0 MAAC) stayed undefeated at home with a 5-0 mark this season behind a masterful performance at the faceoff "X" by sophomore Logan Banek and another sterling defensive effort in net by senior goalkeeper Vito DeBellis.

Featuring the last two MAAC Faceoff Specialists of the Year in the Golden Griffins' Micah Hanson and the Saints' Banek, Siena's FOGO was successful on 15 of 19 faceoffs and added a team-high nine ground balls.

DeBellis registered 56 plus minutes in net and allowed just five goals and came up with 13 saves including nine in the first half. His save percentage of .722 was a season-high as he improved to 8-2 on the season.

Offensively, the Saints received a balanced scoring attack with a five-point performance from Travis Fry and a pair of four-point days from Patrick Linton and Caden Olmstead (three goals and one assist apiece). Conor Hufnagel also scored twice.
Canisius (3-7, 2-2 MAAC) was led by Mike Belles and Peter Biglin, who each scored twice. In net, Sam Kosloski (2-2) made 10 saves in full time.

Colby LeBlanc put the Saints on the scoreboard with the first goal at 13:37, assisted by Linton. The Griffins struggled to find the back of the net despite several attempts, as DeBellis successfully saved shots from Carson Christy, Quinn Huber, and Mike Belles. The quarter concluded with the Saints maintaining a 1-0 lead, highlighted by strong defensive play and strategic clears.

Siena extended its lead with a commanding second quarter, marked by Linton's early goal at 13:46. Olmstead contributed significantly with two goals, the first at 11:35 assisted by LeBlanc, and another just seconds later, assisted by R.J. Ihlefeld, bringing the score to 4-0. Canisius responded with Belles scoring twice, narrowing the gap to 5-2. However, Hufnagel found the net with 1:28 remaining, assisted by Travis Fry, to close the quarter with a 6-2 advantage.

The third quarter featured a series of pivotal moments, starting with Hufnagel capitalizing on a man-up opportunity at 11:49, assisted by Fry, to extend their lead. Linton added another goal for Siena shortly after, assisted by Hufnagel, putting them ahead 8-2. Canisius responded with determination as Jordan Meech scored a man-up goal at 6:27, assisted by Dawson Wade, and Peter Biglin followed with two goals, one unassisted at 6:07 and another assisted by Lowen Martin at 0:58, narrowing the deficit to 8-5 by the end of the quarter.

Siena dominated the fourth quarter. Fry opened the scoring with a goal just 18 seconds into the quarter, and later added another at the 3:33 mark. Gavin Blenk scored with an assist from Fry at 10:50, while Carter Fort and Olmstead each contributed goals, further extending Siena's lead. The defensive efforts, highlighted by DeBellis's saves and timely caused turnovers by players like Joe Valenza and Tim McDonald, kept Canisius scoreless in the final frame.

Siena will be back on the road next Saturday when the Saints take on Iona (2-11, 2-3 MAAC) at 1 p.m. at Mazzella Field in New Rochelle, NY.
