Baseball Drops Rubber Game at Charlotte

Senior right-hander Derek McDaid allowed just two earned runs through seven innings, and helped himself at the plate by going 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI, as Charlotte defeated Siena, 9-4, on Sunday at Tom and Lib Phillips Field. Gabe Perez went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Saints. Michael Ambury added two hits.

McDaid improved his record to 3-1 on the mound this season, while the 49ers continued on the best start in school history at 14-4 overall with the win. Siena fell to 1-8 on the season with the loss.

Aaron Bray was 4-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, while Mike Ambrose finished the day 3-for-5 with two RBI for Charlotte. Spencer Steedley was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, while O'Brien Taylor stayed hot with two more hits in the game.

Siena (1-8) led 3-2 as the teams headed to the bottom of the fifth inning, plating two runs in the top of the second and one in the third. Perez tied the game in the second inning with a single to left, and the Saints took a 2-1 lead on Ambury's double to right. In the third Siena grabbed a 3-1 lead on Chris Klepps' sacrifice fly which scored Rick Seltzer who doubled.

Charlotte broke the game open with six runs in the fifth inning on seven hits.

Siena scored its final run of the game in the sixth inning on a Scott King single, cutting the Charlotte lead to 8-4. The 49ers scored the game's final run in the seventh.

Freshman Kevin Hawk pitched one and a third innings of scoreless relief for the Saints. Siena will take on East Tennessee State at 7 p.m. Monday.
