Baseball Powers Past Holy Cross 13-10 in Home Opener

March 28, 2006

Final Stats

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Gabe Perez homered twice as Siena rallied from a 5-0 deficit to defeat visiting Holy Cross 13-10 in Loudonville Tuesday. Both teams combined for 28 hits but the Saints snapped a six-game losing streak with the come-from-behind victory.

Holy Cross struck for five runs in the third inning off Siena starter Trevor Reid. Kyle Lister's three-run homerun to left centerfield capped off the rally as the Crusaders took command of the game early.

Siena responded quickly, tying the game with five runs in its half of the third. Perez' first homerun of the day made the score 5-2 and Chris Klepps doubled home two runs later in the inning, and came around to score on the play on an overthrow.

With the score tied, 5-5, Reid settled down on the hill and held the Crusaders scoreless, giving up just two hits through the middle three innings. The Saints rallied to take their first lead with three runs in the fourth. Perez lined a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall with Michael Ambury on base to put Siena up 7-5. Rick Seltzer's double later in the inning plated Bill Lazio with Siena's eighth run.

Nick Messenger scored on a wild pitch after singling with one out in the fifth.

Holy Cross pulled to within one with three runs in the seventh, thanks in part to two Siena errors. Jamie Aldrich's double chased home Norm Roth and the Crusaders scored twice more on groundouts, making the score 9-8. Andy Wells came in and avoided further damage by inducing a double-play and a line-out to end the threat.

Wells picked up his first collegiate save pitching three innings of relief allowing one earned run. Reid improved to 1-2 on the season with the victory.

Siena iced the game with four insurance runs in the eighth. Messinger doubled over Aldrich's head in left with the bases loaded to key the rally.

The Crusaders scored twice in their final at bat to bring the potential-tying run to the plate, but Wells again worked out of trouble striking out the final two batters of the game.

Jake Willis was among the five Siena starters to post a multi-hit game. Willis went 3-for-5 raising his team-leading batting average to .327. Tucker Frawley, Brendan Akashian and Roth each had two of the Crusaders 14 hits. Aldrich went 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

Siena returns to action Wednesday afternoon at Hofstra.
