Final Stats
Four Siena pitchers combined on a two-hitter and the Saints used a big five-run second inning in a 14-3 win over Cornell on Tuesday afternoon at Hoy Field. The Saints improved to 14-24-1 with the victory, while the Big Red slipped to 10-25.
Jake Willis and Chris Klepps each had three of Siena's 17 hits and the Saints scored in seven of their nine at bats.
Six for Siena's 17 hits went for extra bases as the Saints scored 10 runs or more for the sixth time this season. Siena's pitchers also allowed just two hits as Ryan King, Will Hassett, Kevin Snyder and Trevor Reid combined for nine strikeouts. They did issue six walks and hit four batters in the win.
Cornell's lone hits on the afternoon were singles by William Pauly and Nathan Ford on a cold, wet Tuesday afternoon affair.
Siena needed just two hits to score five runs in the second inning, taking advantage of the Big Red's control problems. The Saints took advantage of five walks and two hit batsmen, while the big hits came off the bats of Michael Ambury and Willis. Siena added a run in the third to go up 6-0, but left the bases loaded.
Rick Seltzer joined Eric Hildenbrand, Ambury, Willis and Klepps with multihit games for Siena.
Cornell scored all three of its runs in the third inning, but the Saints got almost all of those runs right back in the top of the fourth, scoring twice, including a long double to the right-centerfield gap by Billy Lazio to extend the lead to 8-3 after four. Siena put three more runs on the board in the sixth and single runs in each of the final three innings to make it 14-3.
The Saints travel to Wagner Thursday for a single game with the Seahawks.
