Siena and Fairfield Split MAAC Doubleheader

May 18, 2006

Final Stats Game 1
Final Stats Game 2

Freshman Andy Wells and senior Kevin Snyder combined for a seven-hit shutout as Siena took the backend of a MAAC doubleheader with Fairfield 4-0 in Loudonville Thursday. The Stags rallied to win the opener 5-4 in 10 innings despite being out-hit 13-7.

Jake Willis and Matt Gidaly led Siena's 13-hit attack with three hits a piece in the opener, but the Saints left 12 men on base and Fairfield battled back for a 5-4 win in the 10th.

Siena starter Trevor Reid pitched nine and two third innings allowing just seven hits and three earned runs in suffering the hard-luck loss. Reid fell victim to his own poor defense, as two of his throwing errors led to a pair of Fairfield runs.

Adam Chilelli doubled home the winning run with two outs in the 10th for the Stags. Chilelli was the only Fairfield player with two hits. Dan Breen picked up the win in relief for the Stags, pitching three scoreless innings and sacrificing just two hits.

The Saints scored twice in their first at bat on Rick Seltzer's RBI single up the middle, and held a 3-2 lead entering the seventh inning when Fairfield rallied to score twice, taking the lead on Dave Jermine's ground out. Siena forced extra innings with a run in the eighth on Gabe Perez' RBI single to centerfield. The Saints left the bases loaded with nobody out in the seventh and wasted Eric Hildenbrand's leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth.

Wells was effective in the first MAAC start of his career in game two, pitching five innings of scoreless baseball, while scattering six hits and three walks. The Saints gave him all the help he would need with three runs in the first inning.

Seltzer and Bill Lazio each singled home a run in the frame and Phil Cahill's sharp grounder to first base with runners at second and third accounted for the other score.

Lazio singled home the fourth run in the bottom of the third inning, capping off a fine afternoon at the plate in the penultimate game of his career. Gidaly joined Lazio with two hits in the nightcap, giving him a team-high five on the afternoon.

John Scafie had two hits for the visitors and Paul DeMarco went the distance allowing four runs on the hill. Kevin Snyder made his second relief appearance of the day and fifth in five games this week. He was again strong, allowing just one hit in two innings.

The two teams complete the three-game set, and along with it their seasons, with a single game at noon tomorrow. Siena will honor the nine members of its senior class before the game.
