The Siena College women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to visiting Quinnipiac University Tuesday afternoon in Loudonville. The match marked the season opener for both schools, each of which advanced to last year's NCAA Tournament.
"I was happy with the way we played," head coach Tim O'Brien said. "We were really strong in the singles competition, but need to improve our overall doubles play."
The Saints trailed 1-0 after losing the combined doubles point, 2-1. The Saints' revamped doubles lineup included top singles player Sarah Mayer matched with Jessica Ferrara at second doubles and Taylor Barvoets joined with Julia Lebedev at first doubles. Both teams lost their matches, while Sugam Langer and Karina Davis held third doubles.
In singles play, the Saints quickly gained a 3-0 advantage, taking the first three matches contested. Mayer won her match 6-3, 6-3 over highly regarded Gabby Pasternak. Barvoets followed with a 7-5, 6-1 win at second singles over Jackie Herb and Lebedev won at fourth singles 6-1 and 6-4 over Amanda Patruzzi.
Quinnipiac bounced back to win the final three singles matches and take the overall match 4-3. Mary Wilson took the key third singles point, defeating Davis 6-2 and 6-2. Kasey Rosenberger and Danielle Rodriguez held fifth and sixth singles respectively.
Siena returns to action this weekend in the ITA East Regionals at West Point.
