Final Stats
Michael Van Schaick scored a career-high 27 points to help Fairfield past Siena 72-67 in Albany Friday night. The Stags rallied from a nine-point deficit with 5:32 remaining to hand Siena its third home conference loss in 10 days.
Van Schaick tied the game at 66-66 with his fifth 3-pointer of the game with 1:03 remaining. After Kenny Hasbrouck missed a jumper on the other end for Siena, Van Schaick was fouled with 30 seconds left and converted both free throws.
Siena had a chance to tie, but David Ryan missed the first of two free throws with 22 seconds left. After Jonathan Han made two free throws to put Fairfield up 70-67 with 16 seconds to go, the Saints failed to get a shot off. The Stags knocked the ball out of bounds with five seconds remaining, and, following a timeout, Hasbrouck's inbounds pass was intercepted.
The final minute spoiled an otherwise exceptional effort from Hasbrouck who led the Saints with 23 points and made 7-11 shots from the field. Michael Haddix had 14 points and 14 rebounds in a losing effort - his sixth double-double in eight games.
Fairfield closed the first half with a 10-0 run to tie the score at 30-30. Van Schaick accounted for six points during the final 1:30 of the half.
The Saints led by as many as 12 in the first half following one of Tay Fisher's three first half 3-pointers.
Siena shot 46% from the field and 38% from 3-point range and limited the Stags to just 39% from the floor and 36% from long range. Fairfield made 22 free throws; Siena attempted just 21.
Van Schaick, a native of nearby Glens Falls, was playing in front of friends and family members in his final trip to the Capital Region.
The Saints, losers of three of their last four games, travel to Manhattan on Sunday for a 2 p.m. tip with the Jaspers.
