Siena broke out of a season-long 3-point drought in a big way, converting 10-15 first half 3-pointers to put visiting NJIT away early in an 87-63 victory at Times Union Center in Albany Tuesday night. Tay Fisher scored 14 of his career-high 21 points before the break highlighting a 53-point effort for the Siena bench which saw extended minutes in the lopsided win.
Ronald Moore made his first four 3-pointers and Fisher made 4-6 long range attempts before intermission, as the Saints converted just one fewer 3-pointer in the first half than they had in an entire game all season.
Siena took its first 10-point lead, 17-7, on a Michael Haddix free throw at the 15:14 mark. After taking a 22-11 lead on a Moore 3-pointer, they led by double digits the rest of the way.
Freshman Cory Magee gave the team its first 20-point lead, 43-22 with two free throws at the 4:11 mark of the first half. The Saints led by their largest margin - 32 points - with 9:30 to go in the second half.
Mike Beers scored eight points, had five rebounds and dished out three assists playing 20 minutes, and running the point for much of the second half. Magee had six points and nine rebounds in a season-high 24 minutes. Mousse Diop had four points and two rebounds in 11 minutes of action.
Even reserves Mick Doemel and Darius Haddix got into the action. Doemel scored his first career points on a 3-pointer from the top of the key seconds after he entered the game and Haddix scored his first career points on a jumper with four seconds left.
It was the second time this season the Saints have defeated independent NJIT by 24 points. Siena won 64-40 in Newark in November. In that game defense was the difference, this time it was Siena's offense.
The Saints shot 52% from the field and 60% from 3-point range in the win.
Siena has won two straight games after defeating Manhattan on the road Sunday. The Saints return to MAAC action at Rider on Saturday. Tip-off at the Sovereign Bank Arena is set for 3 p.m.
