LOUDONVILLE, NY – New Siena Men's Basketball Head Coach
Nevada Smith has announced his seventh new addition since taking the helm, with the signing of Germany prospect Yannis Steger.
"Yannis brings some experience to a young core of newcomers," said Smith. "He is a versatile big who is really good playing in and out of actions. Yannis is bouncy off the floor and can really move. His experience playing against really great competition in Europe will benefit us from Day One. We are excited to bring Yannis into our family and watch him grow."
A 6-9, 200-pound forward from Oberhausen, Germany, Steger primarily competed this past season for Sunkings Saarlouis in the Germany Regionalliga. In 21 appearances, he averaged 11.7 points, 5.8 rebounds (2.9 offensive), and 1.4 blocks spanning 25.1 minutes. Steger shot 55% from the field and scored in double figures 12 times to go along with three-double-doubles, highlighted by a 30-point, 15-rebound (nine offensive) performance on 10-13 shooting vs. Bensheim on Nov. 8.
Steger has also seen action for VET-CONCEPT Gladiators Trier in the Basketball Bundesliga – the highest level of pro basketball in Germany – appearing in a pair of games earlier this season. He first appeared in 12 regular season games – plus a playoff contest – during the 2024-25 season in the Second Division, helping Gladiators Trier earn promotion from the ProA to the Bundesliga.
Steger previously played in the youth academy of Bayer Leverkusen. He has also competed on the FIBA 3x3 circuit since 2022, most recently leading DER STAMM underdogs to a fourth-place finish at the ING 3x3 German Championship last summer.
Steger becomes the 12
