Final Stats
James Madison shot 75% from the field in the second half and did not miss a shot in the final 11 minutes, pulling away for a 100-88 victory in the season opener for both schools Saturday in Harrisonburg. Juwaan James had 20 points and made all eight of his field goal attempts to pace the Dukes.
"They are a very talented team with a lot of weapons," Siena head coach Fran McCaffery said. "I thought we played well offensively, but obviously didn't get the stops we needed. They have more depth than they have in the past and a lot more options. It was a difficult team to game plan for because they can hurt you in so many ways."
Edwin Ubiles led the Saints with a career-high 27 points. Kenny Hasbrouck and Ronald Moore each had 19.
The Saints held a 44-42 lead at halftime after a sloppy first 20 minutes that included 35 total turnovers.
JMU led 71-70 with 9:17 remaining before using a 14-6 run to assume control.
The Saints reached the double bonus early in the final stanza and scored 19 points from the charity stripe after intermission. But in the deciding minutes, the Saints settled for hurried jumpers.
"I thought our shot selection at times was poor, but that will be easy to fix," McCaffery said.
JMU had five players in double figures and scored 100 points for just the second time in program history. Point guard Pierre Curtis and forward Terrance Carter played through foul trouble to score 16 and 15 points respectively. Transfer Abdulai Jalloh had 12 of his 15 points in the second half, including several difficult late runners and Kyle Swanston made three straight second half 3-pointers to turn the momentum on his way to 13 points.
The Dukes shot 65% from the field for the game after making 21 of 28 shots - including its last nine - in the second half.
Hasbrouck and Ubiles were each in double figures in the first half for Siena, which was efficient on offense despite 17 turnovers before the break. The Saints shot 53% from the field in the first half, but just 44% for the game.
Siena continues its season Monday at Syracuse in the First Round of the NIT Season Tip-Off at 7 p.m.
