Saint Joseph's scored the final eight points of the game to erase a 68-66 deficit with 1:33 to go on its way to a 74-68 road win at Siena Friday night. Rob Ferguson's open 3-pointer gave the Hawks the lead for good with 1:24 left.
Ahmed Nivins led the way with 20 points and seven rebounds for the Hawks which made 10-20 3-pointers. Pat Calathes had 14 points and 16 rebounds. Ferguson made 4-4 3-pointers and finished with 14 as well.
Siena, playing without second-leading scorer Alex Franklin, was led by sophomore Edwin Ubiles with 16 points.
The Saints scored seven straight points with just over eight minutes to go, to cap off a 20-7 run and gain a 61-57 lead. After St. Joseph's took a 65-63 lead on a pair of Nivins' free throws with 2:38 remaining, Ronald Moore hit a 3-pointer and a running jumper to give Siena the lead back.
Pat Calathes intercepted a Moore pass and raced the length of the floor for a decisive dunk that pushed the lead to five with 12 seconds left.
In addition to Franklin's absence due to a back injury, starting center Cory Magee played just six minutes with an illness for the Saints. Leading scorer Kenny Hasbrouck scored just four points and did not play the final three minutes after injuring his back.
Tay Fisher and freshman Clarence Jackson came off the bench to combine for 24 points. Fisher made three of Siena's eight 3-pointers.
"I thought we competed very well tonight," Siena head coach Fran McCaffery said. "Our young guys stepped in and gave us a chance to win."
Freshman Ryan Rossiter had eight points and eight rebounds. Moore ended with 12 points and five assists.
For the second straight game, the Saints hung tough on the board against a bigger opponent. The Hawks held a slim 39-36 edge on the glass.
The loss snapped a four-game win streak for Siena which had won nine straight at home and 13 of its last 14 non-conference home games. Saints Joseph's won its second straight game despite shooting just 39% from the floor in the second half.
Siena completes its four game homestand Monday at 2 p.m. against Dartmouth.
