Josh Tarnow singled through the left side of the infield with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to chase home the winning run as New Orleans surged past Siena 8-7 Monday at Privateer Park in New Orleans. The Saints scored six runs in the second inning to take a big early lead, but couldn't hold on.
Siena (0-3) had five hits in the second, scoring three runs on a Moises Riviera's home run. Later in the inning, junior captain Jake Willis doubled home a pair of runs to complete the rally.
After three scoreless innings on the mound, Siena freshman starter Craig Marcellus was touched up for three runs in the fourth. Greg Wolfe and Drew Anderson both homered, helping UNO cut the deficit in half.
The Prviateers (5-5) inched closer on a Jarrod Ware home run in the fifth, but Nick Messinger responded with his third home run of the season in the sixth, to put the Saints up 7-4.
TJ Baxter tripled home a run in the sixth and pinch hitter Nick Schwaner tied the game with a two run triple in the eighth to set up Tarnow's game winning safety in the ninth.
Willis led Siena's eight-hit attacks with a pair of hits. Tarnow had three hits for New Orleans. Leadoff man Ryan Eden had two.
Siena returns to action at South Alabama on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
