NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Siena shot 61% from the floor in the second half and held Iona to just seven field goals after intermission in a 71-53 road win in New Rochelle Friday. Kenny Hasbrouck scored 20 points and Edwin Ubiles added 16 in the victory.
Trailing 28-26 at the break, Siena scored the first nine points of the second half, taking the lead for good when Michael Haddix completed a three-point play with 19:21 to go.
Haddix scored seven of his nine points in the first three minutes and 27 seconds of the second half to give Siena a much needed spark.
The Saints completed a 32-6 run to start the second half on a Hasbrouck jumper with 9:06 remaining, taking a 58-38 lead.
Siena dominated every facet of the game in the second half, scoring at will and holding the Gaels to just 32% from the field.
Ronald Moore effectively ran the point for the Saints, finishing with 10 points, five assists and five steals.
Alex Franklin and Tay Fisher again played solid minutes off the bench. Franklin finished with five points and eight rebounds, while Fisher had all seven of his points in the second half including a key four-point play following a mile Iona rally.
"I would say (the first 13 minutes of the second half) was the best we have run the offense in terms of decision making and finding the open man," Siena head coach Fran McCaffery said. "We have to win on the road if we want a chance to be in this thing, and this was a good start."
Justin Marshall and De'Shaune Griffin combined for 23 of Iona's 28 points in the first half as the Gaels took a two-point lead to the locker room. Griffin led Iona with 16 points, Marshall finished with 15.
Siena returns to action Sunday at 1 p.m. Saint Peter's.
