KNOXVILLE, TENN. - The Tennessee Volunteers utilized a four-run second inning to push past Siena, 5-0, in non-conference action Saturday in Knoxville. Sophomore Matt Moberg was credited with the loss after pitching five innings of work, allowing four hits and four runs, while striking out five. As a team, the Saints now drop to 0-11 on the season, while the Volunteers improve to 10-7.
The Vols' tallied an early 4-0 cushion in the bottom portion of the second inning when on two outs, Andy Simunic singled up the middle, driving in Jeff Lockwood who singled earlier in the frame and Cody Brown who reached base safely on a fielding error with two outs. Wit h the Vols' ahead 2-0, sophomore Danny Lima reached base on a throwing error by Moberg, which scored Simunic after he had stolen second base in an earlier sequence. The Moberg error also scored Jarred Frazier who had originally walked and then advanced to third on the Simunic single.
With senior pitcher Trevor Reid on the mound in relief of Moberg, the Volunteers added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when, following a Shawn Griffin single and sac-bunt by Brown to advance his teammate to second base, Frazier singled through the left side of the field, driving in Griffin who reached third base on a wild pitch to give the Volunteers a decisive 5-0 lead and eventual victory over the still winless Saints.
Junior left-handed pitcher James Adkins held the Saints scoreless, as he captured his second win of the season after throwing eight solid innings of work, allowing just five hits and two walks in the 27 batters in which he faced.
The Saints conclude the three-game set with the SEC-representative Volunteers tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 p.m.
