Loudonville, N.Y. - The Siena (6-4) women's water polo team made a fourth quarter comeback to knock off Mercyhurst 4-2 in their first game at the Penn. State Behrend Invitational this afternoon. Sophomore attacker Erin Clune registered the game winning goal with 4:24 remaining in the fourth quarter. Lauren Garrigan tallied a game-high three points in the winning effort.
"This was the best team-game we have played so far this season," said head coach Rob Swingle. "It is really something that we all can be proud of."
The Saints got on the board in the second quarter when Garrigan converted on a penalty shot that was drawn by sophomore center Lauren Biehle. With 6:28 on the clock, Garrigan blasted a shot into the back of the net to put the Saints on top 1-0. Siena would carry this one goal advantage into the half.
Mercyhurst came out of the second half energized as they converted on back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead into the fourth quarter.
With their backs against the wall, the Saints put together a valiant fourth quarter comeback. At the 7:09 mark senior attacker Anne LaFex evened the game at 2-2 with a goal on a 6-on-5 advantage. Then minutes later, Clune sent the game winner past the Mercyhurst goaltender at the 4:24 mark. Garrigan added an insurance goal at 1:10 to send the Saints off with their first win of the day.
Junior goaltender Kaedy Graves was dominant between the pipes as she recorded a first half shutout. Graves added seven saves on the afternoon. Junior Lisa Reilly managed five saves in goal during the second half.
