Final Stats
Iona College pounded out 14 hits in a 9-1 win over Siena in the continuation of a suspended game from Saturday night. Rick Seltzer's homerun accounted for Siena's only run of the game. The Gaels (7-10, 3-0 MAAC) won their fourth game in last five tries with the victory.
On Saturday night at Fordham's Houlihan Park, Iona got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning when sophomore Andrew Wernicki legged out a soft roller that Siena's (0-18, 0-3 MAAC) second baseman couldn't handle and scored sophomore Joe Lorenzo. Lorenzo led off the inning with a double.
The game was suspended by crew chief Jeff Burt entering the bottom of the third inning as the two teams reconvened at Salesian Field this afternoon.
Lorenzo led off the restart with a single. The ball skipped off the right fielder's glove allowing the junior to reach second base. After being pushed to third on a ground out, senior Allie Abbatiello drove in Lorenzo with a clean single to right field for Iona's second run.
Junior Bobby DiNuzzo began the top of the fourth relieving rookie Justin Wiley after he pitched three solid innings on Saturday night. DiNuzzo got off to an inauspicious start, allowing a long home run to Siena's Rick Selzter. After walking the next batter, the Saints would not get another base runner until the ninth inning. DiNuzzo retired 16 straight batters before a base hit snuck past an outstretched glove with one out in the final frame.
The Gaels added two more runs in the fourth. Senior Nick Capowski and junior 2B Ralph Marzella (Staten Island, NY) each picked up RBI singles in the frame.
Five runs combined in the seventh and eighth innings rounded out the scoring for the Gaels. A two-run double to deep left center field by rookie LF Andrew Passerelle (Sparta, NJ) accounted for the seventh inning tallies. Abbatiello's single and Passerelle's sacrifice fly led to two runs in the eighth. Rookie DH Dylan McCullough singled to left center to drive in Iona's final run.
Lorenzo recorded a Gael season-best four hits while scoring three runs in the win. Marzella and Abbatiello had two hits and two runs a piece as the Iona 1-2-3 punch combined for a 8-for-14 performance with seven runs scored and three RBI.
DiNuzzo (1-2) earned the win tossing six innings, allowing just three base runners and striking out three to pick up his first win in Maroon & Gold. Wiley tossed the first three innings on Saturday giving up a hit and a walk while also striking out three.
Siena's Craig Marcellus (0-2) took the loss.
