April 14, 2007

Final Stats - Game 1
Final Stats - Game 2

The Siena baseball team split a double header this afternoon at Saint Peter's (17-16, 7-4). The Peacocks took the first game 8-4 and the Saints responded with a 6-2 victory in game two of the series.

In the first game, Peacocks catcher Mike McGuire delivered two homeruns, the second coming in the fifth inning, to give Saint Peter's a 3-0 edge. The Saints finally got on the board in the sixth inning when Rick Seltzer (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) drove in Jason DeFilippo (Gloucester, Mass./Stoneham) on a two out double into center field.

Saint Peter's responded with a two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to take an 8-1 advantage into the top of the ninth.

Siena loaded up the bases in the ninth thanks to back-to-back singles from Ryan Burke (Weston, Conn./Weston) then Gary DerHagopian (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape), and a walk by Nick Messinger (Norton, Mass./Bishop Feehan). However, the Saints only managed three runs before the Peacocks shut the door on their late inning rally.

In game two, Siena struck first in the second inning when DeFilippo drove in second baseman Michael Ambury (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) to put the Saints on the scoreboard. The Peacocks answered in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run homer from Santo Maertz to take a 2-1 lead.

Siena tied the game at 2-2 in the third inning. Then a Jacob Willis (Niantic, Conn./East Lyme) single up the middle in the very next inning knocked in Chris Klepps (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) to give the Saints the lead for good. Klepps was magnificent at the plate going 4-for-4 in the game. Siena catcher Phil Cahill (Wall, N.J./CBA) also delivered a solid performance going 2-for-3.

The Saints added three insurance runs in the seventh inning to secure a 6-2 victory. Starting left hander Matt Moberg (State College, Pa./State College Area) earned his first win of the season allowing just five hits and two runs in seven innings of work.

Siena returns to action tomorrow afternoon for it's final game with the Peacocks. Game time is slated for noon.
