Final Stats
Loudonville, N.Y. - The Siena baseball team dropped its non-conference match-up to Rhode Island 5-4 this afternoon in Loudonville. Jake Willis's (Niantic, Conn./East Lyme) solo homerun in the fourth inning put the Saints on top 4-1, but that proved not to be enough as the Rams rallied for four runs in the fifth inning to take a one run decision.
Siena (7-28) got on the scoreboard early thanks to two first inning runs from Chris Klepps (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) and Jason DeFilippo (Gloucester, Mass./Stoneham). Both players managed three hits on the afternoon.
DeFilippo scored first on a fielding error; then Klepps recorded the second run when Anthony Giansanti (Montville, Conn./Montville) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Siena added two more runs in the second and fourth innings before the Rams battled back in the fifth.
Rhode Island (16-24) opened the inning with three straight singles to load up the bases. Rams senior Ryan Cunningham then followed with a single of his own which drove in a pair of runs. Back-to-back RBIs from Chris Parkinson and Dan Rhault gave Rhode Island a 5-4 advantage.
The Rams carried this lead into the eighth inning before Eric Smith shut the door on the Saints comeback hopes with five strikeouts.
Trevor Reid (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) earned the loss going six innings and allowing four earned runs.
The Saints return to action tomorrow for their contest with UMass. Game time is set for 4 p.m. in Loudonville.
