Final Stats
Loudonville, N.Y. - Freshman forward Joe Tavernese posted the game winning goal in the 94th minute to help the Saints get past St. Francis 1-0 this afternoon on Siena Field. The goal marked Tavernese's first of his collegiate career.
The squads battled through the first 90 minutes of action in this defensive stalemate. Senior co-captain Liam Welsh, junior Brian Woodfield and Kevin Gluchowski were efficient in the back holding the Terriers scoreless.
The Saints outshot St. Francis 20-8 over the course of the contest, just missing prime scoring opportunities in regulation. At the 50:29 mark, senior co-captain Jason Laffin evaded a defender on the left side and fired a shot on goal just saved by the diving Terriers goalkeeper Chris Antonio.
Soon thereafter, Laffin placed another shot just high of the cross-bar keeping the contest locked at 0-0.
Just minutes into the first overtime session, the Saints aggressively made a push up field. Laffin gained control of the ball on the left side, served a pass to Tavernese who placed one past the charging Antonio to give the Saints a 1-0 victory in sudden death.
Freshman goalkeeper Steve Skonieczny was solid between the pipes delivering his second consecutive shutout. Skonieczny finished with one save on the afternoon, while Antonio notched seven.
Siena looks to extend its two game winning streak on Wednesday when they square off with cross-town rival UAlbany on Siena Field. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
