LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena women's soccer captain Shana Brady and sophomore men's golfer Don DeNyse III have been named the Leo Dufort Student Athletes of the Month for October. The duo both excelled on the field of play and in the classroom.
A native of Brick, N.J., Brady was a Second Team All-MAAC selection this season after anchoring the center back position. She led a defensive unit that was second in the league with a stingy 0.75 goals against average and posted eight shutouts. Additionally, she started all 19 games this season for a team that posted a program record 13 wins.
An excellent student to boot, Brady recently was named a MAAC All-Academic Team selection for a third straight season. She currently holds a 3.54 GPA as an English Education major.
DeNyse has been a staple on the men's golf team for the past year and a half, leading the Saints to continued success. A local product from Albany by way of Christian Brothers Academy, DeNyse was the 2008 MAAC Rookie of the Year. During the fall season, he led the Saints placing 48th overall at the ECAC Championships and closed out the slate with a top-10 score at the Lehigh Invitational.
In the classroom, DeNyse did well during his freshman year and currently boasts a 3.19 GPA as Marketing and Management major.
The Leo Dufort Student-Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student-Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954, was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
