ALBANY, N.Y. - Edwin Ubiles poured in 23 points and Ronald Moore scored 17 and dished out seven assists as Siena led for the final 39 minutes and 29 seconds in a 71-64 win over UAlbany in front of 13,251 fans Saturday night at Times Union Center. It marks the fourth straight time Siena has secured the Albany Cup and the seventh in the eight years the teams have played at the Division I level.
The Saints dominated the action in the first half, building a 15-point lead with 1:20 left with pressure defense and precision shooting. Siena led 39-29 at halftime after shooting 57% from the field and forcing nine turnovers.
Siena led 55-42 when UAlbany used a 13-5 run to cut the lead to 60-55 with 4:38 left, but the Great Danes got no closer.
Ubiles hit a huge 3-pointer to push the lead to 65-56 with 2:06 remaining. Moore, who was unguarded most of the night by the Danes, made 6-11 field goals and 2-4 3-pointers on his way to a season-high in scoring.
UAlbany out-rebounded Siena 48-30 and had 69 field goal attempts compared to just 52 for Siena.
Still, both teams converting the same number of field goals (26) and Siena used its driving, motion offense to get to the free throw line 10 more times. The Saints also held the Great Danes to 3-15 shooting from 3-point range and had a 50%-38% edge in field goal shooting for the night.
Siena continued its struggles from the free throw line, making just 52% of their tries, but did convert 5-6 in the final 1:12 to secure the game.
UAlbany was led in scoring by Tim Ambrose with 15 points. Anthony Raffa scored 13 and Will Harris and Brian Connelly rounded out the Danes' balanced scoring attack with 12 points each.
Kenny Hasbrouck became just the seventh player to reach 1,500 career points at Siena, doing so with a free throw in the second half. Hasbrocuk made just 1-8 field goals and missed all three of his 3-pointers on the night.
The crowd was the second largest in the history of the rivalry, falling just 11 people shy of last year's record crowd. Still it marks the third largest regular-season home crowd in Siena history.
The Saints will host Marist Tuesday at 7 p.m.
