ALBANY, N.Y. - Greg Manning came off the bench cold to drain a game-tying 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in regulation and Loyola rode the momentum to an 83-76 overtime win over Siena at Times Union Center Saturday in MAAC play. Edwin Ubiles scored a career-high 37 points - the most by a Saint since Doremus Bennerman's 51-point effort in the NIT Third Place game March 30, 1994 - in a losing effort.
The Greyhounds pulled within a game of Siena in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings. The Saints remain tied for first place with Rider, which lost at Fairfield 88-76.
Loyola scored the first seven points of overtime. Michael Tuck started with a fade-away hook over Josh Duell, then Brian Rudolph converted a layup and a 3-pointer. Siena fell behind 73-66 and never recovered. The Saints had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Ubiles missed a pull-up 3 from the top of the key in the final seconds. The rebound bounced around as the clock expired.
Siena led by as many as eight points in the second half with 7:27 to go and was riding high following an ally-oop from Ronald Moore to Ubiles that put the Saints up 63-59.
But Loyola tied the game in the final minutes. Siena's Alex Franklin fouled out with 2:25 left when Brian Rudolph converted a three-point play to even the score at 63. Siena's leading post presence finished with seven points and eight rebounds in just 18 minutes. The result was disaster on the glass.
Loyola out-rebounded Siena 44-28 offsetting a crisp offensive performance by the Saints that yielded just five turnovers in 45 minutes.
Despite playing the last 10 minutes of the first half without Franklin and Kenny Hasbrouck (who picked up two fouls in the first three minutes), the Saints managed to keep the score tied at 32 at halftime.
Brett Harvey had 19 points to lead Loyola, which has won four straight against Siena for the first time in the 44-game history of the series. Michael Tuck had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Brian Rudolph added a career-high 15 points.
The Greyhounds shot 25-27 from the foul line and won their fifth straight overtime game and second straight OT decision over Siena in this building in as many years.
