Siena Drops Two in UVA Tournament

Feb. 29, 2008

Final Stats

Domenic Di Ricco's sacrifice fly provided the only run of the game as Cornell defeated Siena 1-0 in the first game of the University of Virginia Tournament Friday in Charlottesville, Va. Siena starter Craig Chaput pitched six shutout innings, striking out eight in suffering the hard luck loss.

Chaput was matched by Cornell starter Corey Pappel who also went six innings, allowing just four hits and collecting six strikeouts. Both bull pens were also solid. Matt hill picked up the victory with three scoreless innings of relief for the Big Red, while Ryan King and Maikel Hurtado allowed just the one run in three innings of work.

Siena sophomore Anthony Giansanti was the only player for either team to post a multi-hit game. Giansanti went 2-for-4 with the game's only extra base hit - a seventh inning double. Both teams had five hits. Cornell scored its run after a balk moved pinch runner Ry Kagan to third base in the top of the seventh.

In the nightcap, Virginia topped Siena 17-2. Greg Miclat had three hits and five RBI to pace the Caviliers. Mike Ambury had two hits for the Saints. Jacob Thompson picked up the win with seven innings, allowing four hits and one unearned run.
