Rhode Island Rallies Past Saints in Ninth

April 10, 2008

Final Stats

Zoey Angulo and Rob Deveney each hits two-run doubles in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Rhode Island baseball team past Siena, 6-5, Thursday afternoon at Bill Beck Field. Siena led 5-0 and carried a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

Freshman Kevin Quaranto went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. He drove home Siena's first run of the game in the top of the third. Moises Rivera drive to right field plated two more runs later in the frame.

In the fifth, Quaranto homered to right to push the lead to 5-0.

Siena used six pitchers, and four did not allow a run. Tom Hopkins started and gave up two hits and a pair of walks in two innings of work, but worked out of trouble in both innings. Sophomore Frank Cebek allowed just one hit in his two innings of work.

Zach Zeneski's single highlighted a two-run sixth that put the Rams on the board, but after freshman Kyle Sumple worked two perfect innings, it appeared Siena was going to coast home with a victory.

Down by three in the bottom of the ninth, Zaneski led off with a bunt single, freshman Tom Coulombe followed with a walk and senior Mike O'Malley was hit by a pitch to set up Deveney's two-run double to right center. With Deveney on second and O'Malley on third, the Saints went to reliever Ryan King. King intentionally walked freshman Jeff Cammans to reload the bases for Angulo, who sent the ball deep into left center, plating O'Malley and Deveney for the 6-5 win.

Freshman Cam Fox earned the win for the Rams, making his first career appearance in the top of the ninth.

Hagey, Zaneski and Deveney finished with two hits apiece while freshman starter Ken Graveline lasted five innings and gave up five hits and five runs (three earned) with five strikeouts.

The win improves URI's record to 12-19 while the Saints drop to 8-20. Siena returns to action for a home series this weekend against Fairfield.
