Siena Baseball Takes Two from League Leading Canisius

April 19, 2008

Box Score

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Siena baseball team took both games of a doubleheader from league leading Canisius, 12-6 in the first game and a come-from-behind 3-1 victory in the second game in Buffalo Saturday afternoon. The Saints (14-22, 7-7) are riding a five-game winning streak and handed the Golden Griffs (28-6, 8-3) just their second and third MAAC losses of the year, while snapping their six-game winning streak.

The first game was knotted 2-2 after three innings until Chris Klepps hit a three run home run in the fourth. Jake Willis and Eric Mruczek followed with homers in the fifth and sixth innings respectively and Phil Cahill added a two-run single. Siena scored nine runs over those three innings.

Craig Chaput earned the win, pitching seven innings and giving up six runs. Freshman Dan Lazzaroni continued his bullpen brilliance, throwing two shutout innings in relief.

Canisius' Ryan Asis and Kevin Mahoney drove in two runs apiece with singles. Branson Joseph hit a two-run home run in the eighth, helping bounce Chaput from the game, but Lazzaroni came in to finish the Golden Griffs.

In game two, Siena trailed 1-0 entering their final at-bat in the seventh. But, a costly error by the Golden Griffs started a three-run inning. Nick Messinger hit an RBI-double scoring Mruczek to tie the game. With two outs, Anthony Giansanti hit an RBI-single scoring Messinger. Klepps tacked on an insurance run when he singled to score Giansanti. All three runs were unearned.

Both freshman Zach Hartman and Shane Davis went the distance for their teams. Hartman (4-0) gave up one run on five hits in seven innings to record the win.

Siena plays Canisius in the final game tomorrow in Buffalo. First pitch is slated for noon.
