LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena baseball lost a heartbreaker to league leader Canisius 10-9 when Branson Joseph hit a walk-off three run home run Sunday afternoon in Buffalo. The Saints (14-23, 7-8) led 9-3 going into the bottom of the eighth, but the Golden Griffs (29-6, 9-3) scored seven runs to comeback and win.
Siena led the entire game until the walk-off home run. Eight different Saints scored and seven posted hits.
The Saints got on the board in the second when Jason DeFilippo scored on a throwing error and Phil Cahill later singled in Anthony Giansanti.
In the fourth, Nick Messinger scored on a throwing error and Eric Mruczek hit a solo shot in the fifth to extend the lead.
The Golden Griffs cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Kevin Mahoney hit a two-run home run. Mahoney went 4-for-4 and hit three home runs and six RBI.
In the sixth, Cahill drove in Kevin Quaranto with an RBI single and then later scored on an RBI double hit by Chris Klepps. Jacob Willis followed with a solo shot to make it 6-2.
Will Hassett allowed five runs in seven innings, but was replaced by Ryan King in the eighth after giving up a solo home run to Ian Choy and a single to Joseph. Mahoney later hit a three run bomb to make it a 9-7 game. Canisius scored four runs in the eighth on six hits.
King was replaced by Miklas in the ninth after hitting Adam Donato and walking Choy. Joseph then hit the walk-off three run home run to win the game for Canisius.
Siena returns to action on Tuesday at Cornell.
