Baseball Flying High, Sweeps Rider on the Road

May 3, 2008

Final Stats

Craig Chaput and Zach Hartman pitched back-to-back complete games and the Siena offense provided all the necessary support in a 10-1 and 4-2 doubleheader sweep of Rider in Lawrenceville Saturday afternoon. The Saints improved to 9-8 in MAAC play with the win, while Rider falls to 12-8.

Jacob Willis homered and was one of five players to post a multi-hit game in the opener for the red-hot Saints, winners of 12 of their last 14 games. Sophomore Anthony Giansanti and senior Chris Klepps each had three hits. Klepps drove in three runs and Giansanti scored three times.

Siena led just 2-1 entering the final third of the game, but struck for three runs in the seventh and five in the ninth. It was more than enough help for Chaput who pitched all nine innings, scattering 10 hits and striking out four in just his second win in nine decisions.

Mike Petroski went eight innings for Rider and allowed eight hits and five runs, suffering his third setback of the season.

Rick Seltzer and Jason DeFilippo added two hits apiece for Siena. David Hayes led Rider with three hits and the Broncs' top three batters combined for seven of the team's 10 hits.

Moises Rivera and Giansanti each homered in the nightcap as Siena rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to complete the doubleheader sweep. Rider scored both of its runs in the first inning off Hartman who improved to 6-0 during his fabulous freshman campaign.

Sean Olson drove home the Broncs' first run on one of his three hits in the game and John Ralston delivered the second with an RBI single.

Rivera tied the game in the fifth with a two run blast that followed an Eric Mruczek single. Seltzer knocked home Siena's third run - the eventual game-winner - later in the inning. Giansanti's solo blast in the seventh accounted for the final 4-2 tally. Giansanti and Willis both had multihit games for Siena.

The two teams complete their three-game set Sunday at noon. It's a meaningful game for both teams as the MAAC Tournament nears and today's sweep closed the gap between the fourth place Broncs and hard-charging Saints.
