Final Stats
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Sophomore forward Ashleigh Barone scored two goals in less than two minutes in the second half to propel Siena women's soccer past Niagara 2-0 Friday afternoon. Goalkeeper Laura Ettinger made six saves to earn her first shutout of the season.
Niagara (7-7-1, 3-3) outshot Siena (11-3, 5-2) 9-7 in the first half and 15-12 in the game. The Purple Eagles controlled possession for the final 25 minutes of the first half but didn't create any significant scoring chances. Siena's back line of Maren Serafine, Shannon Clancy, Samantha Butzke, Jenna Placke and Lisa Valenziano did well to break up plays and block shots. The Saints blocked six shots in the game.
Niagara kept the ball in Siena's end for the majority of the second half. Ettinger and Siena's defense kept the game scoreless until Barone struck for two goals to put the game away. Her first goal started in Siena's half. Junior midfielder Cara Riley won the ball back for her team and brought the ball up field. She passed to Tabitha Tice who took it down the right flank and played a low cross into the box. Barone slid into the keeper and knocked the loose ball into the net. Less than two minutes later, Riley sent a ball through the heart of Niagara's defense and Barone ran onto it and finished one-on-one with the keeper. She now leads the team in scoring with 20 points.
Siena returns to action this Sunday when it hosts Canisius. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
