Final Stats
Craig Chaput and Kyle Sumple combined to allow just five hits and one unearned run as Siena shook off a 28-hour bus ride to comfortably win its season opener 5-1 over Arkansas State in the Texas Arlington Hilton Invitational Saturday.
The Saints struck first, scoring on an RBI groundout by Jason DeFilippo in the second inning. Arkansas State rallied to tie the game in the fourth, but Siena answered with three runs in the fifth.
Don DiPetta delivered the big hit of the inning - a two RBI single through the left side with no outs. Freshman Dan Paolini later drew a bases loaded walk to make the score 4-1.
Anthony Giansanti led off the seventh with a home run to account for the 5-1 final.
The story of the game was Siena's strong pitching. Fifth year starter Craig Chaput tossed five innings allowing just three hits and a single unearned run while striking out three. Sophomore Kyle Sumple was superb in relief. He tossed four innings and allowed just two hits.
The Saints continue Tournament play against Texas State and Texas Arlington Sunday.
