Michigan Sweeps Pair from Siena Baseball

March 7, 2009

Final Stats

Michigan defeated Siena 12-3 and 19-6 in a baseball doubleheader Saturday at the Tradition Complex in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Eric Mruczek and freshman third baseman Will Cardona each had three hits in the first game for the Saints.

Siena (1-11) held a 2-1 lead entering the fourth inning of game one, but the Wolverines (10-2) scored once in the fourth to tie the game, twice in the fifth to take the lead and six times in the sixth to break the game open.

The offensive outburst was more than enough for starter Eric Katzman, who fanned seven Saints through five-and-two-thirds innings of work before giving way to sophomores Tyler Burgoon and Matt Gerbe who finished off Katzman's second win of the season.

Michigan added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth on Ryan LaMarre's second two-run home run of the game.

Dan Paolini and Kevin Quaranto joined Mruczek and Cardona with multihit games for Siena.

In game two, sophomore Travis Smith struck out five in the first two innings on his way to eight strikeouts as Michigan cruised to a 19-6 win.

Coley Crank and LaMarre stayed red-hot for Michigan, going 3-for-3 and 1-for-3, respectively, with LaMarre clubbing his third homer of the day, a three-run shot in the third inning, which put Michigan on top 4-0.

Anthony Giansanti and Don DiPetta had two hits in defeat for Siena.

The Wolverines are back in action on Sunday (March 8) when they complete the weekend with an exhibition contest against the New York Mets at 12:10 p.m. at Tradition Field Complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
